Florida’s ATV Trail Systems

The state of Florida maintains a select number of off-road trails on public lands, usually associated with a state park or forest. We’ve listed a few of the more popular ones below.

Tate’s Hell State Forest Trails

Up in the panhandle, just off the gulf, you’ll find Tate’s Hell State Forest. Don’t let the name intimidate you. You’ll find lots of stunning views, interesting landmarks, and a set of OHV trails. The trails reach over 150 miles through the forest, winding through cypress swamps, pine flatwoods, and blackwater rivers, introducing you to the many species that call this area home. You can also ask about booking a campsite for an extended stay.

Clear Creek Riding Area at Blackwater State Forest

In the Blackwater River State Forest, you’ll find the Clear Creek Riding Area in the Whiting Field region, which provides fun riding areas for motorcycles and ATVs. It’s Florida’s largest forest and you’ll find all sorts of additional amenities and activities to entertain the whole family. Not to mention, you won’t have to share the trails with the motorcycles, as they have a completely different set of trails.

Croom Motorcycle Area at Withlacoochee State Forest

Traveling a little farther south, the Withlacoochee State Forest offers 2600 acres of off-roading space for you and your family, with two day-use areas. You can also enjoy other fun outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing, and horseback riding.

Florida State Forest Rules for ATVs

There are a few rules you’ll want to know about before hitting any public land ATV trail. All ATV operators must have an OHV permit when riding in a state forest. You can get these at the trailhead gatehouses or offices near the entrance. This means your machine will need a title.

You must tow your quad to the staging area and then carefully make your way to the trail, keeping an eye on your surroundings for foot traffic. The speed limit in state forests is 30 mph (all riders are obligated to follow traffic signs and laws). Finally, your machine’s engine and exhaust can’t hit over 96 decibels and you’ll need a spark arrestor approved by the Forest Service installed. If you choose to check out ATV trails on private land, ask the owner about their own rules that they have in place.

Responsible ATV Riding

Of course, no matter where you ride, you’ll want to prioritize safe and responsible ATV riding habits.

  • Wear all your essential safety gear, including helmet and proper riding clothes.
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs and certain prescription medications.
  • Keep an eye on your surroundings for wildlife and hikers.
  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Ride when daylight is plentiful and the weather is conducive to fun and safe adventures.
  • Supervise any children you’re with, especially if they’re operating their own ATV.
  • Wash your ATV after every ride to keep it clean.
  • Clean up your staging area so it’s even cleaner than when you found it.

These are just a few of our favorite trails, but you might have many more that we didn’t mention. We want to hear all about it and help you find your next trail-shredding ATV. Stop by McKibben Powersports Lake Wales for a chat with one of our experienced staff. We welcome all enthusiasts from Lake Wales, Kissimmee, and Lakeland, FL, so visit us today!
