History

Polaris got its start when founders Edgar Hetteen, his younger brother Allan, and close friend David Johnson joined together on their venture Hetteen Hoist & Derrick in 1945. Working out of Roseau, Minnesota, with World War II still raging in the Pacific and metal scarce, they made a name for themselves repairing farm equipment. They gained a following of loyal customers, but it wasn’t until they began tinkering with a better way to reach remote hunting shacks through deep snow that they made the leap from skilled mechanics to innovative entrepreneurs.
 
Now called Polaris, the co-founders developed a prototype snowmobile in 1955, and to prove they hadn’t created a silly toy they planned a 1200-mile journey through the Alaskan wilderness. They proved their vehicle’s durability by hauling 900 pounds of food and equipment on toboggans. Even with temperatures falling to -40 Fahrenheit, they completed the trip in 12 days and proved their motorized snow vehicle was something worthy of attention. 

Polaris was so successful that they began producing snowmobiles exclusively. As they built and improved their brand and production, they began reaching into other markets with different product lines that spoke to their specific strengths in development, powertrain, and distribution. After adding a number of other off-road vehicles to their production lines, Polaris grew into a global powersports leader. They now support three business divisions for their off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and global adjacent markets, including defense contracts with the U.S. Marines.
