McKibben Powersports of Lake Wales is a Hammerhead Off-Road® dealer at 20769 US 27 S, Lake Wales, FL 33853. We sell new Hammerhead go-karts, order the model you want if it is not on the floor, set it up before you collect it, and service it in our own shop afterward.
Hammerhead builds off-road go-karts and a UTV-style kart that sit below full size youth ATVs and side by sides in cost and complexity. For a lot of families in Polk County that is exactly the right place to start. A kid gets a seat, a steering wheel, a belt and a roll cage or brush guard around them, and a parent gets a throttle governor to keep the speed sensible while skills build. It is a very different first experience from balancing on a dirt bike.
Hammerhead stock moves in and out, and there may be little or nothing on the floor on a given week. That does not stop you buying one. Call us, tell us which model you are interested in, and we will tell you what is here, what is on the way, and what we can order. This page explains the range and how to size a young driver to the right kart.
New & Used Hammerhead Off-Road® for Sale in Lake Wales
Age guidance below comes from Hammerhead's own model information. It is a minimum, not a target, so use it alongside the sizing advice further down the page.
HH Torpedo for younger drivers
The HH Torpedo is Hammerhead's entry level kart, rated for drivers 6 years and older. It has a throttle governor for adjustable speed control, adjustable pedals so it fits as the child grows, a lap belt and a brush guard.
It uses a pull start, which keeps things simple. For many families it is the first motorized machine a child ever drives.
Mudhead SE and Mudhead 208R
Both Mudhead models are rated for drivers 10 and older. They add electric start, forward, neutral and reverse, an adjustable driver seat, three point belts and a throttle governor.
The Mudhead SE adds a ROPS roll cage and LED headlights. The 208R has a canopy top, dual headlights and a three-point harness, and is the more budget friendly choice.
GTS 150 and GTS Platinum
The GTS 150 is a bigger 150cc kart with an age limit of 16 and older. It has a five point harness, hydraulic disc brakes, dual A-arm front suspension and reverse. The GTS Platinum adds upgraded shocks and wheels.
These suit older teens and adults, and they are popular with parents who want to ride alongside the kids.
LE-150 UTV-style go-kart
The LE-150 is a UTV-style go-kart that looks and works like a small UTV, with body panels, LED headlights, a brush guard, five point belts, four wheel hydraulic disc brakes and a rear cargo area for light hauling around a property.
Ask us about its age guidance and whether it suits your driver. Hammerhead's current lineup is karts and this UTV-style model; if your child wants a small dirt bike instead, ask about Kayo, which we also carry.
Sizing Your Kid to the Right Machine
The age on the spec sheet is where the conversation starts, not where it ends. Two ten year olds can be very different sizes and have very different amounts of experience. Bring your child with you when you shop, because the fit test takes five minutes and tells you more than any chart.
The fit test
With the belt fastened, your child should reach both pedals fully without sliding forward in the seat, hold the wheel with a slight bend in the elbows, and turn it lock to lock without stretching. The helmet should clear any roll cage or canopy. If they are stretching, go down a size or wait a season.
Kart, youth ATV or youth side by side
A go-kart keeps the driver belted in and low to the ground, and there is no balance to learn. A youth ATV teaches body positioning and is closer to what an adult rides. A youth side by side is the bigger, costlier step. We sell all three, so compare the Hammerhead karts with the youth models on our Yamaha dealer page and Polaris dealer page. Kawasaki youth ATVs are sold here too, and our Kawasaki dealer page explains the KFX youth range.
Leave room to grow, but not too much
Adjustable pedals and seats buy a year or two of growth. Buying a kart the child will grow into in three years usually means one they cannot control properly today, and that is when accidents happen.
Hammerhead Off-Road® Service and Parts in Lake Wales
Our shop handles Hammerhead karts on site: assembly and pre-delivery setup, governor adjustment, oil changes, air filters, CVT belts and clutches, brakes, tires, steering and suspension, and electrical work on electric start and lighting.
Small karts get ridden hard and often put away wet. The most common problems we see are dirty air filters from sandy yards, old fuel left in the tank over the summer, and belts worn from spinning in soft ground. Change the oil on schedule, clean the filter after dusty riding, and use fresh fuel with a stabilizer if the kart will sit for more than a few weeks.
We can order Hammerhead parts, safety flags, covers and replacement belts through our parts counter. If you are not sure which part you need, bring the model and serial number and we will look it up.
Value, Financing and Trade-Ins
Part of the appeal of a Hammerhead is value. A kart typically costs well below a full size youth side by side, so a family can get a child started without committing to a big machine they may outgrow or lose interest in. Call us for current pricing on the model you want.
If you prefer to spread the cost, you can apply for financing online before you visit. Approval, rate and term depend on credit and are not guaranteed.
Trading up from an outgrown kart or youth ATV? Bring it in. A clean machine that starts and runs will always be worth more than one that has been sitting under a tarp.

Set the governor, then earn the speed
Start with the throttle governor turned well down, and only open it up once your child can stop, steer and reverse calmly every time. We will show you how to adjust it at pickup so you are the one in control of the speed.
Gear every ride
A properly fitted helmet, eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and over the ankle boots, every ride, no exceptions. Belts are fastened before the engine starts. Florida requires protective gear for young riders on off-highway vehicles, so confirm the current rules and buy the gear with the kart.
Pick the right place to ride
These karts are off-road vehicles and are not built for public roads. Ride on private property with the owner's permission and away from ponds, ditches and fences. Florida restricts where riders under 16 may operate off-highway vehicles on public land, so check current state rules before riding anywhere other than your own property.
Supervise, always
An adult should watch every ride, especially in the first few months. Keep one driver per seat, no passengers on a single seat kart, and set clear boundaries for where the kart can and cannot go.
Buying a used kart
Check that the governor is still fitted and adjustable, the belts latch properly, the brakes stop straight and the steering has no slop. Look for cracks around the cage and seat mounts. Ask us what we checked and what has been replaced on any pre-owned unit.

Hammerhead Off-Road® Questions We Get Asked
Where can I buy a Hammerhead go-kart near Lake Wales?
McKibben Powersports of Lake Wales sells Hammerhead Off-Road go-karts at 20769 US 27 S, Lake Wales, FL 33853. Stock varies, so call 863.676.2245 to check what is on the floor. If the model you want is not here, we can order it, set it up and show you the controls at pickup.
What age is a Hammerhead go-kart for?
It depends on the model. Hammerhead rates the HH Torpedo for drivers 6 and older, the Mudhead SE and Mudhead 208R for 10 and older, and the GTS 150 for 16 and older. Treat those as minimums and size the kart to your child, checking they reach the pedals and wheel comfortably while belted in.
Are Hammerhead go-karts good for kids?
Yes, Hammerhead youth karts are a popular first machine because the driver sits belted in, low to the ground, with a throttle governor a parent can set. Models like the Mudhead SE add a roll cage. Supervision, proper gear and the right size kart for the child matter as much as the machine.
Is a go-kart or a youth ATV better for a first machine?
A go-kart is usually the easier first machine, because the child is belted into a seat, steers with a wheel and does not need to learn balance. A youth ATV teaches body position and is closer to adult riding. We sell both, so bring your child to sit on each before deciding.
Can kids drive a go-kart on the road in Florida?
No. Hammerhead go-karts are off-road vehicles and are not built or equipped for public roads. Ride on private property with permission. Florida also restricts where riders under 16 may operate off-highway vehicles on public land and requires protective gear, so confirm current state rules before riding anywhere else.
